How We Verify Contractors
Understanding our verification process and your responsibilities as a customer
What We Review Before Listing
Our team manually reviews the following documentation before approving contractors on our platform:
Texas Business Documentation
We collect and review business registration documentation. We do not perform real-time verification with the Texas Secretary of State.
Certificate of Insurance (COI)
We review insurance certificates submitted by contractors. We track expiration dates and prevent contractors with expired insurance from sending quotes. We do not verify policy details with insurance providers.
Professional License Numbers (when applicable)
For regulated trades like HVAC (TDLR) and Plumbing (TSBPE), we collect license numbers. You should independently verify license validity at tdlr.texas.gov before hiring.
What We Do NOT Verify
Texas Trade Market does NOT perform the following checks:
- Criminal background checks on contractors or their employees
- Sex offender registry checks
- Drug testing or screening
- Credit checks or financial history verification
- Verification of work history or references
- Quality of workmanship audits
- Verification of individual employees or subcontractors
Background checks are the sole responsibility of the contractor. Some contractors may choose to conduct background checks on their employees; you should ask about their hiring practices directly.
Important Disclaimer
Verification is not an endorsement. Our verification process confirms certain business credentials, but it does not constitute a recommendation, endorsement, or guarantee of any contractor's work quality, reliability, or safety.
Texas Trade Market is a marketplace that connects customers with contractors. We are not responsible for the conduct, actions, or work performed by any contractor on our platform.
Reviews are user-generated. Reviews on our platform are submitted by customers and have not been independently verified. While we take steps to prevent fraudulent reviews, we cannot guarantee their accuracy.
Your Responsibilities as a Customer
Before hiring any contractor, we strongly recommend that you:
- Request multiple quotes and compare pricing, scope, and timelines
- Ask for references and follow up with past customers
- Verify insurance coverage is current and adequate for your project
- Ask about their hiring practices if you have concerns about who will be in your home
- Get a written contract before any work begins
- Never pay in full upfront - standard practice is a deposit with balance due upon completion
- Check permit requirements with your local municipality for major projects
